The History of the Hermès Constance Bag
The Hermès Constance bag was first added to the collection in 1959 and quickly become an iconic style that has really stood the test of time.
The Constance was commissioned by the artistic director Jean-Louis Dumas and designed by the Hermès draftswoman Catherine Chaillet while she was pregnant with her daughter – when the bag was finally finished, she decided to give it her daughter’s name, Constance.
The Constance first rose to popularity in the 1960s when the First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy was spotted carrying this classic handbag and it has remained a must-have luxury handbag ever since due to its clean lines and modern aesthetic.
Now, one Constance bag can take a Hermès artisan between 14 and 18 hours to create due to the impeccable craftsmanship and incredible attention to detail.
Although this bag may not be quite so world-renowned as the Kelly and Birkin bags, it is just as rare and can be a challenge to find in Hermès boutiques. This means you will have to join a waiting list or become friendly with your local Hermès sale assistant so they can let you know when a Hermès Constance bag arrives in store.
Different Types of Hermès Constance
There are a whole variety of different Constance bags in the collection, so we are here to list the different options available to help you discover which one is right for you!
1. Sizes
Firstly, there are a few different sizes to choose from, the most popular being the Constance 18, also known as the Constance Mini, and the Constance 24. However, there is also the Micro and the Elan, but these are not so common and so may take a little longer to purchase.
The number references the number of centimeters the bag measures in width, so the Constance 24 is 24cm across, while the Micro is 14cm across and the Elan is 25cm across and more of a rectangular shape.
Since the Constance is such a popular bag, there are also Constance Wallet To Go, Constance Slim Wallets, and Constance belts too. You may also find a vintage Constance 23, 25, or Constance Cartable, all of which have now been discontinued.
2. Type of Leather
Just like other Hermès bags, there are lots of types of leather to choose from, including the more common Epsom leather, Evercolor leather, Swift leather, and Togo leather, as well as the rarer exotic skins, such as alligator, ostrich, and lizard leather.

3. Colour and Hardware
There are of course plenty of colours and types of hardware available to suit any personal style. If you are looking for a neutral shade the black, sesame tan, etoupe grey, and gold shades are always fantastic choices that will pair well with a wide range of outfits. But there are also bolder shades too if you want to add a pop of color, including bright pinks, blues, purples, reds, and greens!
Most of the time, the hardware is gold-plated, but you will also find palladium-plated and rose gold-plated hardware.

1. The Constance 18
The Hermès Constance 18, also known as the mini Constance, is the perfect size for an everyday handbag, with enough room inside for your essential items. The bag has a structured silhouette, a leather strap that can be worn on the shoulder or across the body, and an organized interior, split into two separate compartments and finished with a slip pocket.
If you are looking for a neutral-toned handbag, this Hermès Swift Constance 18 in the sesame shade is a great option – the tan color will suit a wide range of looks and is beautifully complimented by the glittering gold hardware.
Or if you want a Constance that is a little more of a statement, this purple Hermès Constance 18 crafted from evercolor leather is just ideal. The bright purple leather and sparkling palladium hardware make an eye-catching combination.
2. The Constance 24
The Hermès Constance 24 is a perfect choice if you need a little more space – the bag has the same iconic style and design, just in a bigger size to fit all your most important items inside! Just like the Constance 18, the Hermès Constance 24 is available in different types of leather, each with different qualities and looks to suit your lifestyle and personal style.
This green-grey Hermès Constance 24 comes in Epsom leather, which has a textured finish, making it more durable and less likely to scratch and scuff – ideal if you are planning on using this bag all the time.
For a pop of color, go for this bright blue Hermès Epsom Verso Constance 24! The key feature of this bag is the blue tone of the H, framed by palladium, meaning the H logo blends a little more into the leather of the bag. The interior of this bag is lined with swift leather and fitted with two interior pockets.
3. Vintage and New
Since the Constance has been around for over 60 years, there have been different iterations of this bag and new versions added to the collection. The Hermès Constance 23 is a discontinued edition of the Constance bag that is now only available through resale sites.
The Hermès Constance 23 above is crafted from luxe black box leather and finished with gold hardware for a polished and refined look. This bag is from 1997 and does not have the same interior as the more recent Hermès Constance bag, instead features a zipper pocket and slip pocket.
One of the most recent additions to the Hermès Constance collection is the Hermès Constance 1-24. From the outside, this look just like the Constance 24, but it is the interior that you will see the most difference.
The interior has just one main compartment, which is fitted with a zipper pocket and two wall pockets, then there is a slip pocket on the back of the bag and a small mirror that also comes with this bag. Just like the vintage Constance 23, this bag is available in glossy black box leather with glittering gold hardware.
