You may have noticed that I have taken a big interest in Korean skincare on the blog lately, and luckily most of you seem to share my interest in Korean beauty tips and tricks.

Although the Korean beauty scene is most notably famous for their skincare and anti-aging products, Korean makeup has also sparked a lot of interest in the West.

As with Korean skincare, Korean makeup comes up with rather innovative solutions to our beauty problems, such as using a sleeping mask, jelly masks and now even cushion eyebrow products to finish of your eye look.

How Is Korean Makeup Different From Western Makeup?

Much like Korean beauty and skincare products, Korean makeup is all about enhancing features on your face, achieving a youthful look and keeping your natural beauty.

Colors: Unlike Western makeup which has a focus on highly pigmented colors that pop on the face, Korean makeup focuses on more light and natural colors such as hues of pinks, oranges or browns to attain the desired look.

Koreans tend to keep clear of colors like greens or dark purples as these colors are considered “mature” and un-youthful.

Skin: Typically, Korean women use a foundation that leaves the skin dewy and radiant.

Korean women are very into their skincare, so most of them will have next to no blemishes, dryness or signs of aging to hide on their face. Make-up is used to further enhance their glowy, healthy skin – not to hide it.

Eyes: The way that Korean women use eyeliner is also slightly different to how women in the West do. Eyeliner is usually drawn so that the wing follows through with the shape of one’s eye hence leaving a natural wing.

Rather than using a black eyeliner, brown is more commonly used in Korean makeup and many even choose to opt out of using eyeliner. Instead, some Korean women use a deep brown eyeshadow to line their eyes to achieve a more natural look.

Brows: Korean women’s obsession with a youthful appearance knows no boundaries. This extends even to the brows: In Korea, it’s believed that straight brows give the face more of a youthful appearance.

This is why straight brows are so common among Korean women and it’s one of the most noticeable differences between Korean and Western beauty ideal.

The Best Korean Makeup According To Koreans

Like many of you reading this article, I was curious to see which Korean makeup products were the most popular and best ranked among Korean women themselves.

To get the latest data I headed to Glow Pick, which is the most popular beauty app in Korea where thousands of users come together to rank and leave reviews for beauty products.

Keep reading to find out which products were the best performing in 10 different makeup categories this year!

The Best Selling Korean Mascara

Best Korean Makeup: Peripera Ink Black Mascara (AD) Long Lash Curl (4.25 Glowpick Rating)

This mascara is made with Korean women’s straight and short lashes in mind: it provides lifting, curling and volume that is hard to achieve on stubborn lashes.

Peripera’s mascara is made with ingredients such as plate powder and silica, which absorb any oil between lashes for a full and firm fit. Other ingredients such as lipid wax create a light and watery texture to improve the curl of the lashes.

The Peripera mascara is advertised as one of those mascara’s that will last all day without smearing one bit, and according to the reviews this is true: one reviewer even said that the longevity of the product is too strong for her liking, and that she has been unable to remove the product with her current makeup remover.

So, if you are someone who has very sensitive eyes that are prone to tears (perhaps from allergies), this mascara could be the perfect fit for you.

The Best Selling Korean Foundation

Best Korean Makeup: Moonshot Micro Settingfit Cushion(4.09 Glowpick Rating)

If you are unfamiliar with cushion foundations, then Moonshot’s Micro Settingfit Cushion may be the best one for you to start with. This cushion foundation has a long-lasting, buildable sheer coverage iand comes in a packaging that is easy to carry around and apply on the go.

The formula is made with mostly Korean skincare concerns in mind: not only does this foundation promote brightening and fight against ageing, it also has UV protection and a strange additional ingredient: a mollusk.

Yes, the foundation comes with snail extract that is a popular Korean skincare ingredient which provides moisture, a cooling sensation and even fights against blemishes.

With the impressive ingredient list of this foundation it’s easy to understand why it ranks so highly among Korean women. On the downside, this foundation is only available in two shades which doesn’t make it suitable for women of color.

If you’re lucky to find a shade in your color, don’t hesitate to read more reviews to see if this foundation could be the perfect one for you too.

The Best Selling Korean Concealer

Best Korean Makeup: Espoir Taping Concealer Long Wear (4.10 Glowpick Rating)

Many Glow Pick reviewers praise Espoir’s concealer for its high coverage, saying that they only needing a thin layer of product to cover blemishes and imperfections.

You may have noticed that the packaging of the product looks very similar to NARS’s famous Radiant Creamy Concealer, and it’s no accident that this has happened. This is Espoir’s answer to a concealer that’s worth comparing against the best concealer in the Western world!

Another selling point of this concealer is it’s longevity: many Korean women write that they only need to apply the product once or twice a day for it to last all day.

On the other hand, this concealer has some flaws too. A reviewer stated that this concealer oxidises quite a bit after applying, so if you’re between shades, go for the lighter shade.

The Best Selling Korean Lipstick

Best Korean Makeup: Too Cool For School Glam Rock Hush Brown (5 Colors)(4.46 Glowpick Rating)

Too Cool For School’s Glam Rock Hush Brown lipsticks are enriched with a long list of impressive ingredients like astrocaryum murumuru seed butter, mango seed butter, cacao seed butter and shea butter to intensely hydrate the lips.

This lipstick comes in 5 colors, all of which are shades of nude and leave a velvety finish on the lips.

Korean women are famous for their innovative and creative solutions in beauty, and lip products are no different. You could use this lipstick to apply color in the traditional way, or you could use a Korean technique called gradation.

Gradation is a popular lip trend in Korea, where color is applied to the inner parts of your lips and then feathered out to the outer parts of your lips, leaving a soft gradient or ombre effect on the lips.

Ideally, you would want to use a soft, blendable lipstick for this technique, and the Too Cool For School’s Glam Rock lipsticks are perfect for that.

The Best Selling Korean Powder

Best Korean Makeup: Mamonde Cotton Veil Powder(4.43 Glowpick Rating)

Korean and Japan have become famous for popularising blotting paper and other powder makeup that doesn’t have any color pigment. Thus, it’s no wonder that Korean’s most popular powder this year is a translucent powder from Mamonde, that promises to keep sebum production under control.

A great feature of this product is the fact that it isn’t drying at all – drying and tight skin are a Korean woman’s worst nightmare after all! This is why even powders that are meant to absorb excess sebum still have some moisture and hydration inducing properties in them.

Another great quality of this product is that the powder is super fine, which allows the powder to smoothen fine lines and leave the skin looking pore-less and soft.

Some reviewer’s have also stated that this product is great to use under lip and eye makeup instead of a primer, if your main concern is to get rid of oiliness and to provide a smooth base.

The Best Selling Korean Blush

Best Korean Makeup: A’Pieu Pastel Blusher(4.38 Glowpick Rating)

From looking at this blusher, you might not realise that it is a blusher at all – that’s how natural Korean women want their makeup to look.

Although this particular color was the most popular among Korean women, this pastel blusher comes in 14 additional shades, ranging from violet to orange tones.

The main reason why Korean women chose this particular blush is because of how natural the finish is: the texture and finish of the blush are soft,  glowy and rosy. Some have even commented that the product creates a blurred effect on their face.

The hero ingredients of the product are as mineral water, sebum powder and pink flower complex, which are

The Best Selling Korean Eyebrow Product

Best Korean Makeup: Laneige Eyebrow Cushion-cara (4.46 Glowpick Rating)

This unique product is something that is not yet popular in the Western market: it’s a cushion brow product that promises an easier application than with traditional methods.

The  product comes with two tones that are meant to be used at different parts of the brow: the darker color as an eyebrow base and the lighter color to extend the brow and provide a bit of an ombre effect.

Although this product is marketed as an easy to use product for beginners, some Korean Youtubers like SPEISHI have reported that it takes some time to get used to if you’ve only used pencils and powder before. Thus, some patience is needed with this product!

Overall, the product comes in two colors: 01 Two-Tone Gray Brown/Khaki Brown and 02 Two-Tone Dark Brown/Light Brown, which are perfect for dark-haired women.

This can be a little bit problematic for those of you with lighter hair, as for the moment there is no color that’s been made for blonde women in mind.

The Best Selling Korean Lip Tint

Best Korean Makeup: Bbia Last Velvet Lip Tint / Set of 5 Here (4.48 Glowpick Rating)

Although lip tints have been around in the West for awhile, they never really took off like they have in Korea.

Lip tints are a great solution for those women who just want a little bit of long lasting color on their lips without having to reapply a product all the time – it’s more natural than a liquid lip, but essentially lasts the same, or even longer.

So, if you still haven’t found the perfect rouge to wear to dinners, this could be it.

As the name suggests, Bbia’s Last Velvet Lip Tint has a velvety texture that sets on the lips as a lip tint. It’s slightly more liquid than a traditional velvet finish lip product, because well, it’s a lip tint after all.

There are a few ways in which you can use this product to get the maximum benefits: Firstly, you could apply the lip tint and leave it as such to enjoy the velvety feeling, or you could apply the lip tint, wait for the color to set and then blot the remainder away.

Either way, the lip tint will last for 12 hours, however the finish of the product will be slightly different.

The Best Selling Korean Lip Gloss

Best Korean Makeup: The Face Shop Face It Artist Finger Gloss (4.07 Glowpick Rating)

The Face Shop’s Face It Lip Gloss is Korea’s answer to YSL’s Vernis à Lèvres – it’s essentially a lip gloss, a lip tint and a lipstick all in one and retails for about $15 instead of $36, which is what YSL is charging.

The main selling point of this lipgloss is the fact that it is actually a staining gloss – it’s a lip tint which doesn’t dry out your lips, and which you can keep re-applying throughout the day if you wanted to.

The product gives you just the right amount of pigment and shine, with a gel-like formula that keeps the moisture locked into your lips. As I mentioned, this product is advertised as a 3-in-1 lip gloss, lip stain and lipstick.

With one coat, you’ll achieve the gloss-like effect, with two, you’ll achieve a lip stain finish, and with three coats the product looks like a lipstick.

So, it’s completely up to you to decide what the end result should be. I need to add that these glosses are very pigmented when compared to the traditional lipglosses that we are used to in the West, so if you’re looking for a sheer lipgloss with almost no pigment, skip this one as it won’t be for you.
