In today’s post I wanted to cover the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use, and then some. There’s one clear favourite in the bunch, but YouTubers and beauty gurus also use a plethora of other cameras in addition to this.

The reason why I wanted to cover this topic is that I’ve recently started my YouTube journey, and in my pursuit of better quality videos I’ve gone on a quest to find out what vlogging cameras other big and successful YouTubers use.I haven’t started vlogging on my channel yet, but I’m thinking of starting as soon as possible – I would love to make a travel vlog of my trip to Japan in April!

So, let’s delve a little deeper! What is the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use?

The 5 Best Vlogging Cameras That Youtubers Use

Vlogging camera that YouTubers use: Canon G7X Mark II

Winner: Canon Powershort G7 Mark II

The Canon G7X Mark II is  one of Canon’s premium range of compact cameras. It’s perfect for those who want a device that offers a high level of control and excellent image quality, but also fits into your pocket.

Used By: Zoella, LaurDIY, Logan Paul, Jake Paul, Patricia Bright, KSI, Jenna Marbles, Joe Sugg, Lily Singh, Jenna Marbles, Fleur De Force, Alfie Deyes, Niomi Smart, Caspar Lee and many more.

  • Excellent image and video quality in any condition
  • Wide aperture zoom lens – excellent performance under low lit conditions
  • Excellent image stabilisation
  • Built in Wifi
  • Touch screen
  • Flip screen
  • Shoots both RAW and JPG files

  • No electronic viewfinder (that is commonly in DSLR cameras – this won’t impact vlogging)
  • No hot shoe
  • Doesn’t support 4K video capture
  • Slower auto focus than Sony RX100 V
  • The autofocus is noisy – you will hear the camera zooming

As you might have guessed by the list, this is the most popular vlogging camera that YouTubers use and is often referred to as the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use.

Every YouTuber and their mother uses this. (Well, not quite, but it is very popular!)

The main benefit of this camera is that it has everything you would need from a good vlogging camera, and it’s priced as an entry level camera.

The Powershot usually retails around $650. It offers DSLR-like creativity in both stills and full HD movies, has built in wifi, a touch screen and produces expert quality images under any light.

Compared to Sony cameras, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II captures video in a distinctively sharper and vibrant manner.

This can be both good and bad and is down to personal preference – the camera makes your surroundings look amazingly crisp and lively, but it can also make imperfections such as wrinkles or blemishes on your face really stand out.

Keep on reading to find out what is the second and third best vlogging camera that Youtubers use! Hint – they’re all pretty affordable!

2. Sony RX100 V

The best vlogging camera that youtubers use

Vlogging camera that YouTubers use: Sony RX100 V

The RX100 V boasts the world’s fastest AF speed1 (0.05 sec.)2, world’s fastest continuous shooting1 speed (24fps)3 with world’s most AF points1 315 for a compact camera.

Used by: Nicole Guerriro, RCLbeauty101, Cameron Dallas, Zane Hijazi, Matthew Santoro,Nicole Guerriero, Joey Graceffa, FaZe Rain

  • Fantastic image quality
  • Amazing auto focus
  • Wide aperture zoom lens – excellent performance under low lit conditions
  • Excellent image stabilisation
  • Built in Wifi
  • Built in electronic view finder
  • Flip screen
  • 24fps burst shooting

  • Very short battery life
  • Very expensive
  • No touch screen
  • No hot shoe – you won’t be able to attach a microphone
  • The lens is longer when compared to Canon PowerShot G7 Mark II – you will need to hold it further from your face, otherwise the video will be very close up

Digital Photography Review describes the Sony RX100 V as ‘the world’s most advanced vlogging camera that YouTubers use – it comes with a 1″-type sensor’, and it’s also the most expensive one. Priced at around $1000, it’s definitely not cheap.

Both the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II and the Sony RX100 V are excellent cameras, but they offer very different video capture. Neither of them is necessarily better – it’s down to personal preference.

A few things that make the Sony RX100 V stand out from the Canon PowerShot G7 Mark II.  First of all the colours and the sharpness of the image are different.

Sony cameras have a distinctly softer lens – the way that the camera captures video is much smoother, which is excellent if you are filming yourself, for example.

The camera will blur out your skin ever so slightly, so that your imperfections don’t stand out as much as with the Canon PowerShot G7X II.

The colours on this Sony camera are slightly more dull when compared to the Canon PowerShot, but again, it’s up to preference if this is a good things or a bad thing.

However, what stands out about this camera is it’s excellent speed at auto focusing – the camera will find your face (or any object you’re filming) extremely quickly even in low lit conditions, which explains why it’s an excellent vlogging camera that YouTubers use consistently.

If you’re switching between objects, the change between what is in focus will be seamless.

The camera also has the option to shoot 4k video, and it also shoots up to 24 images per second – this is great if you’re looking for a camera that will also catch images very quickly.

One of it’s best features is also the excellent slow-mo effect, which enables the user to get even more creative.

However, if you’re just starting out on your vlogging journey, you probably won’t need this camera.

There is also one very big con about this camera – the battery life is horrible. You won’t be able to vlog your whole day using this camera.

You can fix this problem by buying additional batteries, but only the authentic Sony batteries are compatible with this camera – any other brand just won’t do the job. (So, if you were thinking of ordering cheap batteries from Amazon, forget it.)

3. Sony A5100 Vlogging Camera

the best vlogging camera that youtubers use

Vlogging camera that YouTubers Use: Sony A5100

This lightweight camera delivers 24.3MP of detail even in low light, and you can share photos right to your smartphone through built-in Wi-Fi. Record Full HD Video or flip over the 180° tilt screen for perfectly framed selfies.

Used by: Jaclyn Hill, Carly Bybel, Manny MUA, BubzBeauty, Tati, KathleenLights, Shameless Maya

  • Exchangeable lenses
  • Affordable price
  • Fantastic image quality
  • Excellent image stabilisation
  • Built in Wifi
  • Flip screen

  • Very delicate – the camera may get damaged easily
  • Occasional clicking sound when filming
  • The viewfinder can get scratched easily
  • No microphone socket

The Sony A5100 is the most affordable camera on the list starting at just £450/$500.

The appearance of the camera looks somewhat like a cross between a DSLR and a point and shoot camera – the lenses are interchangeable, but the compact size of the camera make it easy to fit in a pocket.

This camera is also one of the few cameras on the list that has a built in flash. Granted, flash won’t be necessary in many vlogging situations, but it’s good to keep in mind if this is something that is important to you personally.

As mentioned before, Sony cameras tend to blur out the skin in a nice way that produces softer and smoother texture in videos, which is possibly makes this the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use, if those YouTubers are beauty gurus.

The touch screen on the camera enables you to auto focus on objects with more ease as well.

However the biggest advantage of this camera is the fact that you can change lenses when ever you want to – this isn’t something that you could do with the Sony RX100 V, for example.

The affordable price and the light weight definitely make this camera an excellent camera for those who are thinking of buying their first ever vlogging camera.

This might be the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use for you if you are looking for an affordable, light weight camera that captures high quality footage.

4. Canon EOS 6D

the best vlogging camera that youtubers use

Vlogging camera that YouTubers use: Canon EOS 6D Mark II

The EOS 6D camera delivers a winning combination of cutting-edge operations and a robust, ergonomic design. The EOS 6D is an ideal tool for creative and ambitious photography.

Used by: Casey Neistat as a vlogging camera

  • Fantastic image quality – 22 megapixel resolution
  • Fast autofocus
  • 6fps continuous shooting
  • Excellent high ISO performance – amazing under low lit conditions
  • Twin memory card slots
  • Excellent image stabilisation
  • Built in electronic view finder
  • Flip screen
  • Ability to switch lenses and attach microphones

  • Very expensive
  • No built in wifi
  • Heavy to carry as a vlogging camera

While other YouTubers such as Carli Bybel, Bethany Mota, Dulce Candy, Tess Christine, Miranda Sings and many more use this camera as their main filming camera, Youtube’s sweetheart Casey Neistat has gone the extra mile and uses this heavy piece as his vlogging camera.

The quality of Neistat’s work is without a doubt outstanding, and there are many benefits that one will gain from using the Canon EOS 6D, but the obvious con of this camera is it’s size and weight. The camera weights almost 1 kg (2 lbs).

If you will be vlogging for the entire day and only holding your camera with just one hand, it will become very tiring after a very short time.

The obvious pros of this camera are the excellent image quality, the fact that you can change lenses, attach a microphone, etc. The camera also has a touch screen.

However, it should be noted that because the camera is a DSLR camera, it may not be the best option for beginners, no matter if you’re planning to use it for vlogging or for other videography on Youtube (like make-up tutorials).

It might be better to go with a point and shoot camera that doesn’t need any adjustments and will be ready to use in auto-mode.

The price of this camera is also incredibly expensive, so unless you are committed and certain that you want to take your blogging to the next stage, consider other cameras before the Canon EOS 6D.

Is this the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use? It’s up to you to decide if you are willing to pay the price and carry around a very heavy object for the entire day.

5. Panasonic Lumix GH5 Camera

the best vlogging camera that youtubers use

Vlogging camera that Youtubers use: Panasonic Lumix GH5

The world’s first 4K/60P video recording camera supporting a professional workflow.

Used by: Jon Olsson, Janni Deler, Ryan Higa, WolfieRaps, Mark Wiens

  • Arguably the best dual image stabilisation a camera can provide
  • Long battery life
  • Amazing image quality – vibrant colours
  • Excellent high ISO performance – amazing under low lit conditions
  • Ability to switch lenses and attach microphones
  • Flip screen
  • 4K video at 60 fps without time limits
  • Great for more advanced cinematic features
  • Great for slow-motion B-roll shooting

  • Very expensive
  • Heavy to carry as a vlogging camera

If you haven’t yet seen Jon and Janni’s amazing vlogs on Youtube, you’re seriously missing out. The quality of their videos is amazing, and can best be described with the word “colourful”. Watch the video below and you will understand what I mean.

Olsson used to use the extortionately prices Leica cameras to begin with, but he has made the switch to Panasonic LUMIX GH5 more recently. One of the reasons behind this switch is because it enables you to shoot 4K video at 60 fps without limits!

The camera is also great for shooting slow motion B-roll, and it can record up to 180 frames per second without cropping. The camera is rather bulky, but at 750 grams it is still slightly lighter than the Canon EOS 6D that Casey Neistat uses for his vlogs. This one reason why it’s very probable that the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 will become a vlogging camera that YouTubers use for high quality content in the future.

The Lumix GH5 also has excellent image stabilisation, brilliant video specification and large and bright EVF. One of the main reasons why Olsson made the switch to the Panasonic LUMIX GH5 was because of its high image stabilisation.

Olsson used to be a professional skier, so he spends a lot of his free time even now moving around – either on slopes or just hiking. However, you couldn’t necessarily tell from his videos, as they are extremely smooth.

Is this the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use or just way too fancy-schmancy for your liking?

So, Which Camera Is The Best Vlogging Camera That YouTubers Use?

As you may have seen, the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II  is widely considered as the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use due to its accessible price point, convenient size and weight, as well how intuitive the camera is to use.

However, it really is down to the user to decide what camera works best with their own style, what they want to achieve with the camera, and if they are willing to spend some extra money and carry some extra weight on their arms.

For the majority of people who are not that bothered about the image quality, the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use will be either the Canon Powershot G7 X Mark III or the Sony RX100 V, depending on if you like smoother or more crisp image.

My personal preference, as it is for the majority of Youtubers, is the Canon G7 X Mark III.

If you are looking to upgrade your vlogging game, maybe the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use would be either the Panasonic GH5 or the Canon EOS 6D – have a look at both Casey’s and Jon’s videos and decide for yourself which type of video you prefer.

As far as affordable cameras go, the Sony A5100 will be the best vlogging camera that YouTubers use if you are not looking to spend too much money on a camera and just want to try out vlogging.

Whichever camera you go for, make sure you protect your gear in an optimal way!
