5 Scented Candles That Actually Work (And Improve Your Health!)
I’m not going to lie – I’ve become a little bit obsessed with candles lately. There seems to be a plethora of expensive candles that are self-proclaimed ‘luxury candles’ and marketed as ‘scented candles that actually work’, but do they really?
I’m sure you know which brands I’m talking about – Jo Malone, Dyptique and Rituals are at the forefront of expensive candles in high street shops. These “luxury” candles cost an absolute fortune and are designed to bring an air of calm into your home when you most need it.
However, what I found out is that actually, these brands that market themselves as ‘luxury candles’ are actually the complete opposite and if you care about your health, you should avoid them at all cost.
This doesn’t mean that there aren’t any scented candles that actually work available on the market – there definitely are! However, they don’t cost nearly as much as these so-called luxury candles.
Now, you may be wondering why expensive candles are not always the best when it comes to your wellbeing, so let’s jump straight into the reasons why.

Are Dyptique Candles Worth The Money?
As I mentioned, the short answer is no. Not because they don’t smell adorable and infuse your home with a stunning range of scents, but because of how they are made.
Although these candles made seem safe they are actually a huge source of indoor air pollutions and can be as dangerous for the body as second-hand smoke.
These scent candles are fabricated from paraffin, which is a petroleum waste product that has to be deodorized and chemically bleached prior to be converted into a wax. A significant amount of candles are formulated from paraffin wax, despite the toxic release being the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes.
Petro-soot from paraffin candles can give off the same level of soot as the exhaust of a diesel engine, causing similar health problems to inhaling second hand smoke.
This can lead to extreme headaches and problems with both the kidneys and lungs. This can also affect your house and leave you walls stained black from soot pollution.
Many scented candles have wicks which contain heavy metals like lead that can create unacceptable levels of airborne heavy metal pollution. Exposure to high amounts of lead like those in candles wicks have been linked to numerous health problems such as hormone disruption and learning disabilities.
Which Scented Candles Are Safe?
Fortunately, there are many fantastic alternatives to these paraffin based scent candles – these are the scented candles that actually work to treat many undesirable conditions such as headaches.
There are plenty of pretty candles that have lovely scents whilst still be home safe. Non-toxic and organic candles are made from healthier waxes like vegetables oils, beeswax, rice, coconut and soy – all of which produce a cleaner burn.
If you want to be extra secure when picking up candles, organic candles are always a safe option: are made from the highest grade all-natural ingredients that don’t contain toxins.
Most organic candles are scented naturally with essential oils that not only provide a wonderful scent but they also have therapeutic benefits. These candles can also have positive health effects as well as smelling good.
Coconut Wax Candle Benefits
Coconut wax is thought to be the most sustainable way to create an organic high melt candle. The coconut oil that forms the wax is obtained via a natural process and coconuts are a high yielding crop.
Coconut wax burns slowly and cleanly, giving off a long lasting scent that does not produce toxins
Coconut wax is made from cold pressed coconut meat in a process similar to the production of coconut oil. The creamy white wax burns longer and cleaner than soy wax, and is considered more natural because it is more sustainably to harvest.
Coconut wax burns cooler so it lasts for a long time and has a high concentration of fragrances. The reason coconut wax is not more common is due to the higher production costs.
Soy VS Coconut Wax Candles
Coconut wax appeared as an alternative to both Paraffin and Soy. Coconut wax burns even longer and cleaner than soy wax. It will burn longer with a stronger fragrance as well as improve the hot and cold throw that occurs when burning soy candles.
Unlike coconut wax soy does not have the ideal qualities for burning as it has trouble throwing fragrance. It is much cheaper to make as the soy bean industry is significantly larger but environmental groups, like WWF, have expressed concern about deforestation associated with the high demand of soy.
Soy requires annual tilling and crop rotations which has been known to scare wildlife away and encourage insects (and therefore pesticides).
Contrary to popular belief soy candles do not burn soot free and are nowhere near as clean as coconut wax candles. Soy candles are rarely 100% natural as the soy wax is usually chemically distilled with hexane boring being bleached with chlorine, deodorized with boric acid and then treated with hydrogen.
Thus, if you are looking for the cleanest and best candles, try out a coconut wax based candle.
