Issey Miyake’s Bao Bao bags have been around for what seems like a century in the fashion world. The pattern that is instantly recognisable where ever you go in the world was first created in 2000, and 18 years onwards, the design remains as iconic as ever.

It hasn’t really been updates since it was launched, and still retails for a higher price than when it was initially launched in some of the best department stores worldwide, such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman.

However, if you’re not dead set on the design and wanted to grab yourself an Issey Miyake Bao Bao look alike bag, then there’s plenty of those available online as well.

The Design Of Bao Bao

As you may notice, the design of the bag is very futuristic and it plays on the idea of having outward protruding 3D shapes on a flat canvas. According to Miyake, this is as much a tribute to futuristic fashion, as it is to traditional Japanese origami art. If you look at it from this perspective, it’s easy to see how the bag looks like a folded, crinkled paper.

Another interesting feature about the bag is that its design changes depending on what you have inside of the bag. Because of the flexible geometric shapes, the bag ‘gives in’ when you fill it with your everyday essentials. This way, you could play around with your bag and truly customise it so that it fits your preference.

Sustainably Eco Friendly

Not only is the bag super functional as an everyday bag, it’s also eco-friendly: the bag is made of PVC materials that are responsibly sourced. Miyake has previously crafted other eco-friendly fashion pieces as well, so he’s not exactly a new name in the eco-fashion world.

For example, in 2010 he launched an origami inspired recycled eco-fashion labeled ‘132 5’ that was originally shown in Paris Fashion Week’s runways, and has since then been available in stores. According to the Financial Times, the label now produces some of the most advanced apparel on the planet, and everything that is part of the label is produced from recycled PET thread. Miyake comments: “We use cutting-edge techniques to turn a Volvic bottle into liquid and then into a textile.” Pretty incredible!

In any case, let me know what you think about Issey Miyake’s famous bag design – is it something that you would wear, or is it too futuristic for you?

Personally, I find the smaller bags (and dupe bags) from this collection really cute, and I’d imagine they would be perfect as a statement bag when you’re going for a night out. I especially like the blue and silver bags with the water droplets – so cute and unique!
