How I Made My First $25,000 Blogging

How I Made My First $25,000 Blogging

Instead of doing another monthly income report, this month I wanted to do a more comprehensive guide to how I made my first $25,000 blogging.

In my two years of blogging in 2017 and 2018, I actually made more than that ($36,348.17 from April 2017 to be exact), but I thought $25,000 was more of a special milestone to celebrate. It also has a better ring to it, don’t you think?

Before we get started, if you don’t already have a blog, I have an amazing deal for you that you can take advantage of!

How I Grew My Income By 500% In 1 Year

1. I Decided To Just Go For It

My income grew substantially from 2017 to 2018: In the tax year of 5th April 2017 to 6th April 2018, I earned a mere $7,821, or an average of $651 per month.

However, from April 2018 to December 2018, my earnings shot to $28,527 in 9 months – an average of $3,169 per month! Not bad for my second year of blogging.

There’s a couple of reasons why my income grew so substantially from 2017 to 2018.

Here's how this fashion blogger earned $25,000 as a new blogger. This blogging income report will show you everything you need to know about what affiliate networks to use, how to grow your Pinterest and how to become a successful blogger! #incomereport #makemoneyblogging #waystomakeextramoney

First of all, in 2017, I was not only in my start up phase with blogging, I was also a full-time masters student in chemistry (fun) and writing up my thesis on Stem Cell research.

Blogging was my passion, but I wasn’t really pressured to make a living out of it. I was planning to apply for jobs and also I didn’t have to pay for my rent at that time (thanks mom!).

However, things took a different turn.  I went travelling and briefly looked for jobs in both marketing and chemistry.

I didn’t really put my heart into it and by October I was certain that I wanted to become a full-time blogger and make a liveable income out of it.

Now when I look back at what I did during that start up phase, I wish I had done things sooooooo differently. At that time, I was barely making ends meet because I focused on all the wrong things.

2. I Stopped Focusing On Instagram

In 2017 was barely even a blogger. I was just an Instagrammer who did sponsored posts! There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but if I had focused on growing my blog, I would’ve been able to grow my income SO much quicker.

In 2017, I treated my blog as an extension to my Instagram – I would just upload outfit pictures and I didn’t focus on providing anything meaningful or valuable to my audience.

I basically just shared my outfit photos, which were nothing special and took forever to put together and edit. No wonder my blog didn’t flourish!

Instead of creating tons of amazing blog posts, I was focusing on followers on Instagram and Youtube.

My main goal was to reach 100k, because I thought that once I had that number, I would be able to ask more for sponsored posts on Instagram.

While yes, that can definitely be the case, it’s really hard to grow your Instagram. The competition is also much higher, and your posts are only valuable for a matter of days – not great.

Even though I had 50k+ followers, I wasn’t really able to monetize my “Insta fame” and make a decent living out of it.

The most important lesson that I learned is that popularity ≠ profits. And of course, profits > popularity when you’re trying to make a living online.

In December 2017 I was so fed up with Instagram that I decided to start focusing on blogging instead.

I had come across a couple of blog income reports that really inspired me, and some helpful SEO videos that gave me the knowledge I needed to start ranking in Google.

I started doing keyword research and slowly but surely, my blog started growing.

As you can see, in 2017 I had barely any visitors on my site. In December 2017, my blog got a mere 2,094 sessions in the entire month. That’s how many visits I now get in one day

So, How Did I Make My First $25,000 Blogging?

Affiliate Marketing: $12,623

Affiliate income made up about 50% of my income in my start up phase of blogging and it continues to be my biggest source of income. Right now, it consistently makes up roughly 60% of my income and it’s my favorite way to monetize my blog.

My top earner has always been Amazon Associates, which makes up about 70% of my total affiliate earnings.

Everyone can get started with an Amazon Associates account, so I strongly encourage you to apply if you haven’t already! They accept everyone with a website and you can stay on the platform as long as you make at least one sale in your first 3 months.

As I mentioned, affiliate marketing is my favorite way to monetize my blog. This is because it’s so passive! You don’t need to focus on selling or creating a product and you also don’t need to deal with customer service.

Affiliate marketing also continues to work while you sleep so if you wanted to, you could go on holiday and leave your business to fend for itself for a month, and your earnings wouldn’t drop significantly! (That’s what I did in December!)

If you’re ready to give affiliate marketing a try, check out the following resources:

Sponsored Posts (On Instagram + Blog): $9,689

As I mentioned, I got started as an Insta-blogger, so most of my early income came from sponsored posts on Instagram. I also did a couple of sponsored blog posts on my blog which paid me pretty well considering the low traffic that I was getting.

Doing sponsored posts is one of the best ways to supplement your income when you’re first getting started with blogging. While I still do sponsored content whenever a great deal comes along, I don’t make more than 25% of my income from it.

In the beginning when I started blogging, I used to pitch to brands all the time and get sponsorships that way.

I know it can be pretty hard to get started with pitching and sending your own proposal across, which is why I’ve created the Perfect Pitch Worksheet that helps you create the perfect email to send to the sponsor of your dreams.

Additionally, I’ve compiled an awesome list of the best platforms that offer sponsorships for bloggers, which you can sign up for free below.

These platforms are all super easy to use and what’s best, you don’t even need to send a pitch! The platform is there to help you out.

Sign up for it if you’re ready to start earning some extra cash from your blog!

RESOURCES:

Here are a couple more resources to help you out with landing sponsorships:

Display Ads: $1,968.48 (YT, Adsense and MediaVine)

I started my YouTube channel around September 2017 and although I now have 500,000+ views on my channel, the amount that I’ve made on YouTube is laughable. On an average month, I’ll earn $40 for 20,000 views. Yep, that’s right, AdSense for fashion bloggers is absolutely terrible.

I also experimented with ads on my blog and at first I didn’t get off to a good start.

I had a couple of ads on my sidebar with AdSense and made about $60 for 50,000 pageviews, which was better than YouTube but pretty awful considering that I now make $500-$1,000 per month from display ads (with around 80,000 pageviews).

I switched to Mediavine as soon as I hit their requirements (25k sessions per month), and I haven’t looked back since!

Ads are my second favorite way of earning income on my blog because even though they can be annoying, they are completely passive. Also, you can adjust the amount of ads that you have on your site, so at the end of the day, you’re in full control!

RESOURCES:

Here’s a couple of resources that will help you to hit 25,000 sessions so that you too can apply for Mediavine:

Freelancing & Misc.:  $719.48

The final amount comes from a project that I did pretty early on into my full-time blogging journey. A company hired me to do research analysis for them and I spent a couple of days a week per month working on the project.

The project required my skills and knowledge about blogging, but it wasn’t beneficial for my blog in any way. At the time I needed the money, but if I got the offer now, I would’t jump on it.

If you’re a beginner blogger and need to supplement your income, I definitely recommend that you try out freelancing if you have the time.

I was personally discovered on LinkedIn, but you can also list your skills in places like Upwork. I hire all my contractors from Upwork now, so it’s definitely a place where you could find lots of relevant opportunities!

Own Products?

As you may have noticed, I didn’t sell any products when I first began blogging. I only launched my first product, the Millenial Presets, in October 2018, and my second product, Explosive Traffic With Tribes in January 2019.

In retrospect, it probably would have benefitted me to get started with my own products sooner, but I’m also glad that I didn’t.

It takes a certain time to master each skill in blogging and it’s never a good idea to have too much going on at the same time. There’s a lot that goes into product creation, so I’m glad that I got started with it when I did.

It’s also incredibly useful to have an e-mail list before you start selling products, but unfortunately during my first two years of blogging I didn’t see the value of having an e-mail list. In retro-spect, I can 100% see why people say that the money is in the list.

Before launching my own products, I took the Six Figure Blogger course which is an insanely useful resource if you’re looking to get started with selling your own products.

It took me about 2 weeks to finish the course because it had that much material and so much new information about email, sales and product research that I had never even thought about before.

Another amazing thing that the course offered was ready made templates that you can use on your sales page, your sales pitch and in your emails.

Even now, I constantly go back to the course every now and again when I need help with sales or pitching.

If you are ready to get started with selling your own product, even something that costs as little as $5, I can’t recommend Six Figure Blogger enough!

I hope this little guide was helpful for you and that you can reach your first $25,000 quicker than you think! Now, on to the next $25,000 😉

If you are wondering what my expenses were, they were around a $100 / month, or $1200 per year. You can read about my expenses in detail here!

What’s Up In January?

January started off with a bang for me. I was actually quite scared that I would make less money than I did in December ($2,146.02), because it’s quite widely known that ad revenue is down in January and consumers aren’t spending that much money after the big holidays.

Fortunately, I was still able to make $1,000 more than in December, mostly thanks to getting a few Instagram sponsorships and launching my second product – Explosive Traffic With Tribes

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you might have noticed that my last post was before Christmas (lol) – it’s good to know that brands aren’t that worried about consistency as they’re rumoured to be.

Divi Theme

I’m also getting closer to putting final touches on my new blog theme (the Divi theme) – everything is still new to me, so there are a couple of technical glitches that are driving me a bit insane, but nothing too major.

I made the decision to switch to Divi from my earlier, “fashion blogger 101” theme because I wanted to be able to build landing pages, sales pages and include custom banners for each individual sub-niche on my site. This simply wouldn’t have been possible without Divi!

Simple, pretty themes are nice, but if you’re looking to take your blog to the next level and start selling products and services, I highly recommend a premium theme like Divi!

Amazon

I also finally found out why my Amazon commissions had dropped and fixed the issue, hooray! 🙂 I figured this out towards the end of January, so my commissions haven’t really gone back to normal just yet – however they are above the $1000 mark again now, which makes me happy!

Previously, my Amazon earnings were down to $760 because of the glitch. Hopefully by next month they will be back to $1300+ – this is what I was getting before I ran into troubles with Amazon.

The issue was in broken links: I was using an app called Azon to make my Amazon links, and out of nowhere Azon went out of business, so all of my links crashed! Azon was great because it would direct the user to their local Amazon store, not just to the US store.

I think Amazon themselves might have destroyed the platform because they don’t approve of link cloaking, but I could be wrong.

I’m now using Amazon’s OneLink system which in theory should operate in the same way as Azon, but my results have been mixed.

Now, let’s move on to the money!

Monthly pageviews: 60,961

Monthly sessions: 41,145

Blog posts published: 6 (one is an updated old post)

Pinterest followers: 7,404 (+877)

My monthly pageviews went down a little bit in January, but I was expecting that. People who work in media always say that January is a month when “nothing happens”, so I was prepared for the worst. Although my ad income suffered heavily, my pageviews didn’t decrease so much!

I’ve also noticed that the amount of returning visitors to my blog has increased. I think this is partly due to the fact that I started implementing OneSignal and e-mail marketing in my strategy.

In January 2018, 15.1% of my visitors were returning visitors, compared to 16.2% in January 2019, and 17% in these 5 days of February 2019.

So, if you haven’t started collecting e-mails or using OneSignal yet, I hiiigly recommend you start doing that! More of this below!

Want To Boost Your Own Traffic?

If you’re looking to start boosting your own traffic and earning more money, there’s two realistic options for you: go for either Google traffic (slow) or Pinterest traffic (fast).

I’ve recently started implementing an aggressive Pinterest and Tailwind Tribes strategy on my blog, and I quickly went from getting 50,000 monthly pageviews to 90,000 in the span of 3 months by using two awesome sources: the Pinterest Traffic Avalanche course and my own strategies in Explosive Traffic With Tribes.

With 100 pages of hands-on, no BS strategies that WORK,  Explosive Traffic With Tribes is an awesome step-by-step blueprint for bloggers to reach 90,000 pageviews with just 30 minutes of work per day. I highly recommend Explosive Traffic With Tribes if 1) You’re looking to increase your traffic 2) You’ve tried everything with Pinterest and nothing’s worked.

After taking Pinterest Traffic Avalanche, I achieved some success with Pinterest, but my blog traffic didn’t really blow up until I started using Tailwind Tribes in my strategy!

Howver, if you’re a complete newbie to Pinterest, the Pinterest Traffic Avalanche course will be an excellent place to start learning!

If you’re looking for free resources to grow your traffic, check out my post on How I Got To 5 Million Pinterest Views.

What Worked: OneSignal Push Notifications

I signed up with OneSignal way back in December, but it was one of those “set and forget” things. OneSignal is a web and mobile push notification service. What it does is that every time that you publish a post, people who have subscribed to your page will receive a notification on the web browser.

Super simple, but genius!

If you haven’t set up OneSignal on your page yet, I highly recommend you do that.

The results aren’t that impressive at first, but it’s another way to get in touch with your readers.

Originally I heard about this method from Jim at Improve Photography.com, who stated that he gets 10% of his blog views with this method! That’s insane!

I can easily see how that’s possible, because even though I’ve been using this method for only two months, I’m already driving 290 additional visitors to my site using OneSignal. (For me, it’s only 0,5% of my monthly visitors, but I’m pretty sure that this will increase in the future as more people subscribe to the notifications! At my current rate, I’m getting almost 10 subscribers per day, which is awesome.)

Another cool thing is that you get to see all the analytics around your posts. This can help you understand what type of posts people are most interested in, and what isn’t working as well.

There’s also some other auto-publishing platforms and plugins that I recommend, mainly Bloglovin, Blogarama and Jetpack – it’s free to register on all of these + they are completely automated, so get on them if you haven’t already!

E-mail Marketing

If you follow any six figure bloggers, you will have heard them say that money is in the list

Seriously, there’s not one super successful blogger who doesn’t say this!

With that being said, I didn’t start e-mail marketing properly until January. I hadn’t launched any products prior to this, so I didn’t really see the point of building a list, let alone paying $29/month for it.

But now, after having a small list for only 2-3 weeks I can already see why bigger bloggers are such fans of email! With only 40-50 people on my list, I was able to make an extra $100 by promoting my own products and affiliate products – how cool is that!

Email is also very scalable and quite passive once you’ve set up opt-ins that collect e-mail addresses and written automated messages that your readers get when they sign up.

For e-mail I recommend ConvertKit – I’ve tried MailChimp previously but the automation is far superior with ConvertKit. They offer a free 14 day trial, so if you are interested in getting started with email, definitely give them a try!

How I Made $5,634 In November & December 2018 (Income Report)

I decided to go ahead and publish November’s and December’s income reports together. It’s been awhile since I’ve written on the blog and quite frankly I would have happily skipped writing these reports if it wasn’t for one of you readers reaching out.

As my blog is primarily about fashion and beauty, I know that blogging related topics such as my income reports are not as popular here. So, I wasn’t sure how many of you were following my monthly updates, especially since my income is rather consistent and it’s not like my blog is blowing up and suddenly going from earning $3k a month to $100k a month.

However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that these income reports seem to help a lot of you guys who are also blogging about similar topics to me, so I decided to continue writing them.

It’s also a fun way to reflect on the past month, what has worked and what needs to be improved.

What’s Up In November & December?

As some of you have probably noticed, I took a break from blogging sometime in December. I’m not exactly sure how long I was on holiday, but I think it must have been 4-5 weeks.

Originally, I planned to stop posting on the blog for a little while in order to get my new theme up and running, along with a new product that I’m launching called Explosive Traffic With Tribes (pre-order now to save 20%!).

I stopped writing posts on November 28th and before I knew it, I hadn’t posted for 6 weeks – oops. (My apologies for that! If I’m ever going on a break again I’ll make sure to schedule some posts in advance!)

However, my new theme is now up and running, the product I was writing is finally ready, and I can start writing more blog posts. If you haven’t seen my new theme yet, go on, check it out and tell me what you think! 🙂 You can see the new homepage here.

I seriously underestimated the time that it takes to redesign a blog, redesign ALL the blog posts, and everything else that goes with it. I’m still not a 100% done with everything that I set out to do, but I’m working on them behind the scenes.

I’m sure that I could’ve done it faster than I did, but oh well. It was the holiday season, so I wasn’t feeling particularly motivated.

As expected, my income suffered a bit, but not too much. I’m actually really happy that even when I was on a complete break from blogging, I managed to pull in over $2000 in one month. That’s why blogging is so amazing – most processes and income is passive!

How I Got 5 Million Pinterest Pageviews

My Pinterest traffic was at it’s all time high in November & December, and I got 5 million views on Pinterest per month! That’s huge!

Now, my Pinterest views have gone down to 3.4 million, but that’s still a pretty cool number.

My traffic from Pinterest has stayed consistent, even though I had a month long break from blogging, which is super exciting! This just means that what I’m doing is working, and that I need to stick to it.

Much of my success with Pinterest can be attributed to Tailwind Tribes, which have worked amazingly well for my blog. I’m sharing all my secrets to getting 90,000+ monthly pageviews in my new 60+ page e-book called Explosive Traffic With Tribes which is launching on the 31st of January.

If you want to get it cheap, now is your chance! If you pre-order, you’ll save 20% on the actual product. If you’re serious about growing your blog traffic, I can’t recommend this book enough.

It’s honestly a steal for the price that it retails for and if you follow my strategy, you can make your money back in a matter of days.

Matched Betting*

$385.74 ($385.74 November / $0 December)

*Although Matched Betting isn’t strictly blogging, it’s an awesome way to make some extra money online, so I wanted to include it on this income report.

I will probably write a detailed post of everything involved in it, but to give you a quick summary, I’ll write a few details down: Matched betting is a fool proof way to earn some extra cash online in the UK.

Don’t be fooled by the name – it’s actually not betting at all. Instead, it’s a surefire way to make some extra money by free bets from betting sites.

There are people in the UK who do it for a living and who earn up to $2,500 per month doing it. Obviously, I wanted to check it out myself too, and it worked fabulously.

I only did it in November, because I was way from the UK in December, and you have to in the UK to participate.

If you’re interested in finding out more, check out Profit Accumulator – it’s a platform that teaches you exactly how to do it.

And best of all, it’s free to try and you’re guaranteed to make about £40 ($50) from it. Another awesome fact is that you only need to put in 1-2h of work per week to see profit.

Total Income: $5,634 ($3,487.98 November / $2146.02 December)

Expenses

Tailwind – $10 (Annual Subscription) x2

(Tailwind is my favourite blogging tool and one of the main reasons I’ve been able to grow my blog so fast. You can try Tailwind completely free for 1 month by clicking here!)

Tailwind Tribes Powerup – $30 (Tribes are free to use to a certain capacity even if you’re not on Tailwind – give them a try here!) x2

Hosting – $10 x2

TubeBuddy: $5 x2

Adobe Lightroom – $13 x2

E-mail – $5  x2

Total Expenses: $146

Net Income: $5488

P.S. Taxes haven’t been reduced yet, and neither have PayPayl fees nor currency exchange rate fees (I live in the UK!).

Product Focus: Bluehost

I also switched from recommending HostGator to recommending Bluehost this month. The reason is simple: Bluehost is more intuitive and suitable for beginners, and it’s more widely used among website owners.

In fact, Bluehost the #1 recommended web hosting by WordPress.org, and it is the most beginner friendly hosting platform out there. It powers over 2 million websites worldwide, and every account features 1-click WordPress installation (which makes it super easy for newbies!)

Bluehost is a hosting site which is very affordable and a must have if you’re thinking of starting a blog or you already have a blog and need to be self hosted. It’s only $2.95 / mo through my special link to have your own blog up and running and self hosted.

So, if you’re not technical, that isn’t a problem! In addition to that, Bluehost has staff available 24/7 to help you out with any problems that you have with your website.

This means that it’s much easier to set up your blog using Bluehost than other hosting providers! These guys are the go-to if you’re a new blogger and I can’t recommend them enough if you’re thinking about starting a blog.

You can easily monetise your blog when you’re with Bluehost as they offer cheap web hosting for all blogging niches.

Millenial Presets

Millenial Presets are my own presets that I created to take my Instagram images to the next level. With my presets, I’ve been able to increase my engagement and create a more cohesive Instagram feed. Millenial Presets are perfect for you if you’re looking to start focusing more on your Instagram image, attract brand deals and start growing your profile quicker.

My Engagement Before & After

I noticed an increase in engagement when I switched to editing my images with Millenial Presetsand although I’ve heard similar stories from other people, I can’t guarantee that this will always be the case. All of my images on my Instagram page are edited with these presets, so if you are curious to see more, either click over to my Instagram page or read more about the presets here.

What Worked In November & December

Signing Up To WeWork Offices

In my previous income report I mentioned that I was going a bit coo-coo working from home. I felt like I was becoming a giant slob and I could just feel the motivation draining out of my body.

In retrospect, I find it so funny that I could even think that working from home was an option for me: as a student, I never studied at home. I just couldn’t. I needed to be around people, even if I didn’t talk to them all day.

So, it seems funny to me now that it has taken me this long to rent out office space. In my mind, I couldn’t justify spending any money on an office when I already had a home office, but here we are. My mindset has now changed: I’d rather pay a little extra to keep myself motivated and my mental health in check.

So, I signed up to WeWork! WeWork is wayyyyy more expensive than I would’ve thought: it’s starts from about $700 per month for a dedicated desk, and the office I signed up to don’t even do barista coffee (lol).

My office is in a great location though – bang on in the middle of The City of London, which is the equivalent to Wall Street in Manhattan (just more central). I went to see a couple of offices but this one was the best value for the price.

And if I want to switch to a WeWork that offers barista coffee in the future, I can do that pretty easily.

Now that I need to start paying an extra $700 a month, I seriously think that it will put me in the right mindset to make even more money with blogging and my business. Now, even though I’m writing about this news in November & December’s income report, I’m actually moving in the offices only on February 1st.  So, you won’t see the office expense listed in the income reports for a couple of months.

If you’re interested in finding out more information, check out WeWork’s home page here

What Didn’t Work

Changes In Amazon Affiliate Earnings

My Amazon affiliate earnings tanked and initially I wasn’t sure why. I was earning $1300 a couple of months ago with the same traffic, and in November, I earned a mere $766 from Amazon US.

I hadn’t changed anything on my website so I was puzzled as to what could have caused it. Now, I think I know the answer, but it will take some time for me to fix it. I was using a third party provider called Azon to make my Amazon links international – meaning that I wanted people from Germany to end up on the German Amazon site instead of the US site, and so on.

Well, it turns out that Azon is no longer in existence. So, I need to go back and update all my posts that have Azon links on them to proper Amazon links. That is going to take some time, but hopefully I will see my affiliate earnings rise from it. I’ll report back in the next few income reports if something changes.

So, if you’ve noticed that there’s been a drop in your affiliate earnings too, maybe something like this is an issue for you too. Check the links on your top20 posts to see if everything works properly!

Next Steps

SO. This section may as well serve as my New Year’s Resolutions, because I’ve added so much on my to do list! I’m not sure if it’s the effect of finally getting an office or just because it’s new year, but I’m feeling super motivated and ready to kick some butt.

I’ve set myself a goal of earning £100k/$100k  this year, which is an incredibly scary goal, mostly because I don’t earn anywhere near it right now. I know that in order to do this, I need to start approaching my blog very differently.

More Helpful Content

First and foremost, I will of course continue to write about fashion related topics, but I’m also planning to add a LOT of content that is aimed at bloggers directly.

I’ve already gained some level of success with my blog, so I want to focus on providing value other aspiring fashion bloggers too. I’ll keep documenting what works and what doesn’t, and keep you updated with everything that happens!

E-Mail Newsletter

After about 6 months of trying to get started with an email newsletter, I’m finally there! If you ask any blogger who makes over 6 figures a year, they’ll tell you that the money is in the list. The e-mail list, that is.

So, 2019 will be the year that I grow my email list. I’m not sure exactly what number to shoot for yet, but I’m excited to start learning about e-mail marketing.

I’m planning on writing one newsletter per week and adding a ton of value in them. If you want to be a part of the journey and connect with me more, please subscribe to the email list on my homepage! 🙂

More Products

I’ve been enjoying creating my own products, and it seems like you guys have enjoyed them too! This year, I want to create at least one course, and focus on marketing my products more than what I have now.

This includes making videos about the products, writing more articles related to them, and perhaps even experimenting with Facebook ads and Instagram ads.

How I Made $4,284 Blogging In October

How I Made $4,284 Blogging In October

This month I earned the most I ever have with my blog – woohoo!  I finally broke the $4000 mark which feels pretty great. If I had taken a job in my industry after graduating last year (in chemistry), I would be making only about $2500 at best per month here in the UK, which is crazy to think about. So, how did I make money online this month?

I’ll go more into the details further down the post, but it all boils down to display advertising, affiliate income, sponsorships and my own products. I was quite lucky this month, because I made over $1000 in sponsored posts, but like I’ve said before, I would really want to stop doing sponsored posts in the next few months.

How I Made $4,285 Blogging In October. My blog income report will show you exactly how I made $4,284 blogging this month through affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, ads and selling digital products. It’s just too darn hard to refuse collaborations at the time – it’s easy money and you get great products in the process. However, like I’ve mentioned before, if you want to be making six figures within a year’s time, sponsorships are not the way to go forward.

So, I’ve put a ban on myself to not do any sponsorships next month and increase my income from other revenues by $500 in the process, so that my over all income wouldn’t suffer too much. It’ll probably help that next month I’ll be travelling to NYC for 2 weeks – it’s quite a bit harder to do sponsored work travelling. You can check back next month if I managed to accomplish this goal or not, ha!

What’s Up In October?

In the beginning of October I set a goal for myself to earn $650 more than I did in September (Read: How I Made $3434 in September 2018) and even to my own surprise, I managed to secure that figure pretty much the first week of October. I received a sponsorship offer for $700 for an Instagram post, so I was feeling pretty good about myself for the rest of the month.

I wanted to bring up my advertising revenue and affiliate income instead of focusing on sponsored content, but sadly those figures remained pretty consitent at around $3000 for both months. Well, I did manage to bring up my ad income to almost $1000 (up $200), but my affiliate income went down by the same amount, so they cancelled each other out.

I also launched my first product, Millenial Presets, which are the presets that I use to edit my own Instagram photos. So far, I’ve only made $100, but I haven’t created any sales centered content for the product so I’m the only one to blame.

I also started creating my second product, which focuses on my Tailwind Tribes Strategy and how I managed to get over 80,000 pageviews using Tailwind Tribes. It will be out in the next few weeks!

Life Updates

Other than blogging, I went to Dubai with my boyfriend’s family and Ian bought me a surprise skydiving session! It was an amazing experience but suuuper terrifying at the same time – I thought I was going to die the entire time that I wasn’t in control of the parachute. I’m going to upload a video of the experience on my Youtube channel soon, so subscribe if you don’t want to miss it!

We also celebrated our one year anniversary and Ian’s birthday by going to see Les Miserables musical and indulging in a spa experience. It was such a fun month, but I do feel like I need to tighten my purse a bit this month going forward – I feel like I spent too much!

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to control myself though, because we are headed to NYC for two weeks AND it will be Black Friday when we’re there! Yikes…

October Blog Stats

Blog Posts: 6
Pageviews: 78,838 (±0%)
Pinterest Followers: 4555 (+1136 from September)
Pinterest Reach: 5 million ( +1.8 million from September)

As you can see my traffic has stayed pretty consistent even after my semi-viral post last month. I’m hoping that it will stay this way, because ad revenue during this time of year is going to be insane.

However, 12% of  my views came from a Halloween themed post, and now that Halloween is over that post is going to be irrelevant.

If you’re thinking about what content to add to your editorial calendar, consider adding a few seasonal pieces – I’ve noticed that these have done particularly well on my site, and I will probably continue with other festive posts going forward!

Crafts, recipes, DIY and decorations are especially popular on Pinterest right now, so any content focusing on those should perform pretty well.

What Worked In October?

Ads!!!

My average RPM now is $12 for 1000 pageviews, which means that I earned $172 more than last month for the same amount of traffic. According to marketers, next month should be even better for ads as people are expected to go into a buying frenzy.

So, if you don’t have ads on your website yet, make sure to turn them on, or apply to a premium ad network.

Pinterest

Pinterest is still working well for me. I’ve fully implemented the all the steps in Pinterest Traffic Avalanche and I’m still using Tribes to drive over 50% of traffic to my website. This month, I received 5 million Pinterest pageviews, which seems to be growing steadily. I

‘m releasing a new e-book called Explosive Traffic Tribes in the following few weeks, where I reveal all the secrets that got me to 80,000 monthly pageviews with the help of Tailwind Tribes. Like I mentioned, I get over 40,000 pageviews directly from Tribes and it’s my biggest source of traffic.

My e-book is completely different from other Pinterest courses, because I don’t focus on Pinterest in my book. I focus solely on crafting the perfect strategy to use in Tailwind Tribes, that’s guaranteed to skyrocket your traffic even quicker than with Pinterest.

If you want to explode your blog traffic in a matter of a few months, this book is for you. Keep your eyes peeled on my website for any new updates!

What Didn’t Work

Working From Home

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m pretty bad at working from home. I always seem to feel lethargic, uninspired and demotivated and it’s hard for me to get anything done. I seem to procrastinate even with the most simple tasks.

Because of this, I often nip to my local cafe and work from there. It has worked so far, but I definitely don’t spend a 9-5 there. I got to talking with a few friends and they all recommend a co-working space like WeWork. The prices for WeWork range a little bit, but for $600 you should be able to get a hot desk from most offices.

For about $700 you would get a dedicated desk. I would still like to earn a little bit more money before hiring an office, but these prices don’t actually seem too bad.

I’m sure that by hiring out office space would have a positive effect on my productivity, and it would be amazing to feel like you have a couple of colleagues too. I would love to try out the arrangement for a little while – perhaps this would be something for the new year!

How I made $3434 In September (& Grew 70% Of My Traffic!)

How I made $3434 In September (& Grew 70% Of My Traffic!)

It’s that time of month again – although this month the income report comes with a bit of a delay. I wasn’t too sure if I should publish another income report yet, as my income has been pretty much the same for the past few months.

I decided to go for it, because I wanted to show you something exciting that happened – I grew almost 70% of my traffic this month because one of my posts went semi-viral on Pinterest!

Gosh, I’m starting to love Pinterest more and more each month. More on that a bit later in the post. In terms of income, even though on the surface it seems like I’ve made pretty much the same amount for the past few months, in reality things have shifted lots.

If you go back to my first income report, you’ll see that even though I earned $3300 that month, 40% of that was coming from sponsorships.

Now, sponsorships make up merely 10% of my income, which means that I need to do less work overall – hooray! This is exactly what I wanted to accomplish with a blog. Now, the next step is to just ramp up that income to a higher tax bracket ($53k/year here in the UK).

What’s Up In September?

September was a pretty chill month for me, and I spent quite a lot of it catching up with friends instead of working. That’s the beauty of blogging – when you’ve automated everything, you can get away with working zero hours if you wanted to! Of course I worked way more than zero hours last month, but there were definitely days that I took off from working, just because I had already reached some of my income goals.

My Own Products

I started working on some of my own products and dabbling with e-mail marketing. When I say dabbling, I mean dabbling. I still haven’t managed to set anything up properly, but I am working towards it. By the time that I do my next income report I should have everything in place.

If you wanted to check out my first product, check out Millenial Presets – these are the presets that I use to edit my own Instagram photos. Any kind of feedback on the sales page would be greatly appreciated as well!

I am also starting to write a short e-book about my success with Tailwind Tribes. By the time of writing this, I’ve almost reached 90k pageviews just from Tailwind Tribes & Pinterest, and I want to share my strategies for growth with you guys! I will do my best to have the e-book out at least in December.

Of course, I will be writing  a few helpful posts covering the topic, but I will go into much more detail in the e-book. Pst, if there are any other products you would like to see from me, let me know in the comments!

It’s not like Amazon that reports each return as a negative sale on the day that it’s returned – on RewardStyle they just take the sale away on the day that the purchase was made. The figure that I’m reporting here is the figure that was available on October 2nd, however the amount that I actually get paid is likely to be slightly lower.

September Traffic – 70% Increase & 3 Million Pinterest Views

Follow me on Pinterest here!

Like I mentioned earlier, I was actually going to skip this month’s income report because my income hadn’t increased that dramatically when compared to last month’s, but then one of my pins went viral and I decided that it would be a good idea to document the change in traffic.

What has happened has been so insane and exciting – I’ve never had a pin go viral before! I was glued to my Google Analytics dashboard in September, refreshing the stats every hour to see how many more visitors had ended up on my blog.

At the end of the month, I had 78k pageviews (up 56%) and 47k users (up 69%), which is just insane to think about. This kind of month on month growth is something that I’ve never experienced before.

My strategy beforehand was to always focus on Google traffic, and with Google the traffic increase is slow, steady and very predictable. With Pinterest on the other hand, you can get crazy swings like what I’m currently experiencing.

My Pinterest views and followers have also gone up dramatically (I’m currently at over 3 million monthly views), so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the traffic will just keep on coming, and never stop (ha).

However, it’s probably not realistic to expect that my traffic will just continue to climb and climb, so I’m enjoying it while I can. Hopefully I can make some more pins go viral, but at the end of the day you never know which pins are going to take off.

How Did I Achieve This Growth?

As I mentioned before, I’ve achieved most of this growth by having a very aggressive strategy with Tailwind Tribes, but I also need to say that Pinterest Traffic Avalanche has been a big factor in my growth.

Pinterest Traffic Avalanche is a course that I took last month and although I already knew most of the material that was taught, there were some hidden gems inside that I implemented and that helped me gain momentum on Pinterest and increase my traffic.

If you are completely new to Pinterest, I would highly recommend that you check out Pinterest Traffic Avalanche before starting to implement more advanced strategies such as Tailwind Tribes.

The course covers everything that you need to know from what type of content you need to write to be successful with Pinterest, how to design pins that create traffic, how to set up your profile and how to do proper SEO on Pinterest.

What Worked In September

Pinterest

Pinterest, Pinterest, and a hundred times more Pinterest! I am looking forward to taking both my Tailwind Tribes strategy to the next level as well as continuing to implement the tricks I learnt from Pinterest Traffic Avalanche.

MediaVine

My ad revenue jumped from $398 to $753 between August and September – that’s a huge increase! Of course, part of this is due to the fact that I had 70% more users on my site, but part of it is also because MediaVine increased their RPM in September (RPM = how much you get paid per 1000 views).

Yes, you heard that right, we’ve finally entered the famous Q4, which usually means that bloggers will earn way more from their ads than what they did previously. My RPM jumped from $7.50 to $10 per 1000 page views which is amazing. So, if you’re thinking of joining an ad network, do it before you miss out on the Q4 earnings!

What Didn’t Work In September

To be honest, I can’t really say what didn’t work this month as everything kind of ran smoothly, which is great. The only thing that didn’t work was me, mostly (ba dum tss). I’ll report back next month if I’ve found things that are proving to be challenging.

August Updates

I will expand a little bit more about this further on, but I feel like August was definitely a month of change: the Google algorithm happened and left me with less traffic than I was expecting, but ironically I also managed to make more money than I’ve previously made.

Because of this new algorithm update I’ve felt a little bit lost in my strategy over the past few weeks: I’m not sure if it would make sense for me to write new, niche articles with the intentions of ranking them on Google, or if I should refine my Pinterest strategy and start writing about topics that are super popular.

These strategies are polar opposites of one another, which has led me to live this month in a state of “I don’t know what I should do next” – not the best place to be.

The conclusion that I came to was that instead of worrying about traffic, I should probably start releasing some of my own digital products, like a lot of other bloggers have done. I have a few ideas, but the first product that I’m working on is my Instagram presets – these are the ones that I use on my personal Instagram feed.

As far as other things in blogging go, I don’t feel like I worked very hard at all in August. I didn’t record the exact number of hours that I worked, but I spent most of the month doing product research and learning about blogging strategies from two courses that I bought – the Six Figure Blogger and Pinterest Traffic Avalanche.

Luckily, most of my revenue on my blog is passive, so the fact that I didn’t create that much content had little to no effect on my income.

Fashion Blog Income Report August 2018

Why I Publish Income Reports

Some of you may be wondering why I want to publish income reports as a fashion and beauty blogger, and that’s a completely legitimate question to ask. Firstly, I know that many of you love reading them.

When I first started blogging I was scouring the Internet for any income reports that I could find – I wanted to know how people were making a living in this online space. I wanted guidance, because I hadn’t made any money myself yet.

I know that many of you fall into the same category, so I want to be as helpful as I can with sharing my strategies. Secondly, making income reports keep me on track with my own finances and analytics. I’m analytical by nature, so I find it very fun to sit down and go through all my stats. This way, it’s easier to see what has been working, what hasn’t, and what I should do next.

Thirdly, I have yet to come across income reports by other fashion or beauty bloggers. Most people who write income reports belong to the “make money online” niche, which is very different from fashion.

I wanted to show my fellow fashion bloggers how I personally run my blog, and any aspiring fashion bloggers that there are more ways to monetise your blog than just sponsorships.

Show Me The Money

Some screenshots. Note: I only post screenshots from Amazon, because I was told that if you post screenshots from RewardStyle it could be against their terms of service. Better be safe than sorry – I definitely don’t want my account terminated.

AFFILIATE MARKETING

Amazon US – $1324

Amazon UK – $210 (£164)

Rewardstyle – $584 (£455)

ShopStyle – $22

21 Buttons – $1 (lol) I haven’t used this app very actively at all this month, but if you’re new to affiliate marketing, it’s a great place to start. BTW! 21 Buttons is now available in the US – it’s a commission based app just like LiketoKnow.it, except that anyone and everyone can join – there are no requirements. Check it out here.

Total Affiliate Income:  $2151 (65% of total income)

SPONSORSHIPS

Instagram – $760 (Read: How To Make Money On Instagram)

This month I received $760 from two campaigns which for me is good, however one of the campaigns paid me significantly less. I took the campaign because it was with Starbucks, who I love and drink almost every day anyway, so I didn’t really mind.

The other campaign is with Nars, and you can expect to see all the pics on my Instagram very soon!

Total Sponsorships: $760 (23% of total income)

How To Blog Efficiently – The 4 Things Other Bloggers Won’t Tell You

Instagram Loop Giveaways – Are They Worth It?

Right, I know that my expenses were very high for this month. Was is necessary? No. Do I regret it? No.

I have been following Alex and Lauren from Create and Co for quite a few months now and I’m constantly in awe over how successfully they manage to make their blogging business work. At the moment, they are earning over $150,000 per month blogging which is insane.

Naturally, I wanted to learn everything that they have done to make their business grow this fast and this quick, so I watched most of their videos on their Youtube channel that explain how they make their money.

I finally took the plunge and bought the Six Figure Blogger course a few weeks back and I was so impressed by it that I went ahead and bought their Pinterest course too. I haven’t had time to implement the lessons in the course yet, but I am definitely going to do that before I release my next income report.

August Traffic – How I lost 50% Traffic

So the Google core update happened….

I hate to say it, but August sucked for my blog. This is the first month since January that my traffic actually declined. And the sole reason for that is that Google had a core algorithm update and my rankings suffered.

As you can see, the last day of July I received over 1,000 visitors from Google – the articles that I had written for SEO were starting to rank and I was feeling jolly good about it. Then, the next day, my visits from Google suddenly dropped by 100, the day after, they dropped another 150.

Slowly, they reached the point where they are now: at around 500 visitors from Google per day. That’s a 50% decrease in traffic from Google!

At first, I hadn’t fully realised what had happened, and I was hoping that the traffic would come back. It hasn’t. Apparently, Google had a major algorithm update on the 1st of August that caused many websites in the health and medical niches to drop in rankings.

However, as you may know, my fashion and beauty blog is far from that, so why did my website drop? Unfortunately, I can’t provide you with any answers to that question yet. I’m doing my best to understand why it has happened, and hopefully I’ll be able to regain my positions.

Any advise on this matter would be greatly appreciated – please do let me know about any insights in the comments! (So far, I’ve only upgraded my website to have SSL, which it didn’t have before.)

Pinterest Traffic

The silver lining in this situation is that my Pinterest traffic has taken off a little bit – it’s now averaging at about 400 visits per day, which is a great improvement from last month (100% increase). The final thing that I want to mention about Google’s core update is that unless I can get my rankings back, I need to completely change my blogging strategy, which sucks. I’m considering starting to use Pinterest as my main source of traffic from now on, which also explains why I went ahead and purchased the Pinterest Traffic Avalanche course. Writing articles for Pinterest and writing articles for Google are completely different, so I feel as if I was back in square one when it comes to brainstorming article ideas.

What Worked In August

I Increased My Income By 90 times On One Link (Switch To RewardStyle!)

I have been using both ShopStyle and RewardStyle for about a year now, and ShopStyle used to be my default affiliate program to turn to. However, after looking at my analytics, I noticed that I was making constant sales through a specific product that I linked to about 4 months ago on my Youtube, so I decided to switch that link to a RewardStyle link.

After two weeks, my earnings on that link shot from $1.30 to $116 per month! If you’re not familiar with how these platforms work, let me explain. ShopStyle pays its affiliate a flat fee per click, which is usually 2-5 cents per click.

How many products you sell doesn’t really matter, nor does the price of the products matter. On the other hand, RewardStyle pays you a commission on whatever sales you generate for them. What’s worth mentioning is that you will be paid a percentage of everything that a customer buys through your link, not just the product that you’ve linked to.

This is something that I didn’t know when I started using there networks, and it makes all the difference in the world when choosing between these platforms. For example, I’ve received up to $120 commission on a single order on RewardStyle, because all the items in that order count towards my commission.

Imagine if I had linked to that retailer on my ShopStyle account – I would’ve only been paid 2 cents for my efforts and left so much money on the table!

I’m a 100% confident that I’ve missed out on a lot of money by using ShopStyle, so I generally can’t recommend it anymore. I won’t be adding any new links from my ShopStyle account, and I will do my best to update any links that I have now to RewardStyle links.

(You will probably still see ShopStyle in my income report though, as I won’t be able to change all of the thoussands of links that I have!) If there’s anyone out there who uses both ShopStyle and RewardStyle, I hiiiiighly encourage you to switch to RewardStyle.

Writing About Beauty

One of my articles about Korean beauty (The Best Of K-Beauty Awards According To Koreans) really took off on Pinterest  and it’s now the most popular article on my blog by a mile. Also, there were two articles that I wrote a while back and that suddenly became very popular on my blog.

This just goes to show that you can’t always expect immediate results – write as much as you can, market the articles well, and let the rest sort itself out.

I also believe that I was able to increase my affiliate earnings despite the decline in traffic because of this article: beauty products are more evergreen than fashion articles, and sometimes the fashion items that I link to will run out of stock. In the case of beauty, this almost never happens.

What Didn’t Work In August

Youtube

If you’ve read my previous income reports you may remember that I was on the fence about YouTube for the past few months – the Adsense money is practically peanuts, but the videos convert well into sales and you can ask for more money per sponsored content.

So, last month I went ahead and hired a video editor. He’s a lovely chap, very professional and very affordable. However, looking at my figures it makes no sense for me to continue with YouTube at the moment.

I would love to be earning six figures in a years time, and I know that it will not happen through Youtube. In August, Youtube brought me in 1% of my income, but took away at least 5 days of my work week – I had to plan videos, shop outfits, film videos and make final edits to my videos.

It would be fine if I enjoyed doing it, but at the moment I sadly don’t. So, for the moment, I won’t be continuing with regular YouTube videos.

Next Steps & Goals

My Own Products

Digital products are a huge source of revenue for bloggers, and I’ve finally decided that it’s about time for me to create some too.

As my first product, I’m going to release my own Lightroom Presets, because many people who follow me on Instagram have been asking about these. (Check out my pictures here! )

As for the next product, I’m not sure what I will go for yet. If there’s anything that you would like to see from me, let me know in the comments!

E-mail Newsletters

As part of creating my own products, I want to learn how to do email marketing properly. This was emphasised in the Six Figure Blogger course, and they also gave some amazing templates to work with. I can’t wait to get started!
